The front page looks good. The picture is clear, the stories are interesting, and overall it looks like a legit newspaper. The only thing really wrong with it is the fact that the main picture does not have an article to go along with it. It should either have a story to go with it or there should be a picture for the other stories on the page. It’s just randomly there and it would be more interesting to readers if they got more information right next to the picture other than just the picture’s caption.

On the third picture of the newspaper called the Hatchet, the layout looks really nice. It looks authentic and there does not seem to be many major problems that would disturb the person reading the newspaper. One of the articles is in a shaded box which makes it easier to read. The ad at the bottom corner is in a convenient spot for both the newspaper and the people supplying the advertisement.  In the shaded box however, there is some gaps of blank space. The article should have either been longer or there could have been something there to make it seem less empty.

Overall, the paper looks good and fits newspaper standards.

Blog 7: Leads

February 21, 2010

“EUGENE, Ore. — Markhuri Sanders-Frison gave Cal a spark off the bench in Thursday night’s 80-64 loss at Oregon State, but once again the flame burned out too early because of foul trouble. The 6-foot-8, 275-pound center was 3-for-3 from the field for seven points and three rebounds in 15 minutes, but fouled out.”

This lead answers who, what, where, when, and why. It also says how the player did. It is a good lead because it explains the most important ideas that the reader wants to know.

“It was Tiger Woods’ newfound sense of decency or Elin Nordegren’s enduring disgust, the decision to keep the golfer’s wife and children out of view for Friday’s semi-confessional was one saving grace of a highly controlled event.”

This lead is kind of based off an observation.  Using a keyword like disgust made it seem a little opinionated.

Blog 6: Midyear

February 8, 2010

This was a different year in journalism. Last year, the class seemed easier and it seems harder this year. Despite the changes, I still got a good grade in the class. To get an A, I need to write more than one article a month or make that once article a long one. I should put more time and effort outside of class and I should be on the way to the grade that I want to get. I learned how to write better so the editors don’t have to edit as much as they had to for my articles last year. My expecations for the next semester is to finish my senior year off on a good note in journalism. I’ll try to get an A and work harder outside of class to get better interviews. I will also write more articles per month and make them longer. Hopefully, I can reach my goal.

Blog 5: Inforgraphics

This is a good inforgraphic for an article about the NBA. It is appealing to sports fans and NBA fans. It could possbily be used for a sports article or column about the NBA.

This is interesting because they tell the news in English, but they also say it in different languages which makes it easier for some students to understand.

Blog 3: Attribution and Interviewing

September 21, 2009

The reporter interview head coach Tom Cable.

“It was as poor as you can play offensively but still find a way to win a football game,” Raiders coach Tom Cable said.

The reporter asked him how he thinks the team played during the game.

“It was a huge step the Oakland Raiders took today, having a chance to do something (different),” Cable said. “At the end of the game, we were behind and we haven’t been able to (overcome) that for a few years.”

He also asked him how this game was different from other games and why he thinks the team won.

The reporter could have also asked about team injuries.

Blog 2: Lead

September 16, 2009

http://www.insidebayarea.com/raiders/ci_13338882

The lead for this story tells the reader what the coach promised before the game and it says that whoever watched the game saw the outcome. Most sports leads in the paper today do not start off with the score. It starts off with what happened before the game, then the next two paragraphs usually talks more about the game’s score and key facts.

Blog 1: Journalism

September 8, 2009

I took this class last year and I did not achive as many goals as I would have liked. This year I want to get an A and reach my deadlines on time. I would also like to get some ads for the newspaper so I could get more credit. I’ll be covering varsity football during the fall and possibly basketball during the winter. I’ll also be the sports columnist and would try to get some of them on The Hatchet. I might even try to be the sports editor for one issue depending on how much work I would want to do. Last year I got a B, hopefully this year I could get an A like I wanted to get last year. I also write about sports for some other sites, and one of them will start to pay for my articles in the near future. I hope to become a sports journalist in the future so being in this class is a good start.  I want more experience as a journalist and more quotes in my stories that I get during interviews. I hope to get an article on the front page. I also made new friends in my class last year, it would be cool to do the same this year.
